When Florence Dery arrived at 国产91尤物福利在线观看鈥檚 to begin work on her master鈥檚 degree, she felt something she鈥檇 never felt before: cold.
鈥淚 had never seen snow or cold before,鈥 says Dery, who was living away from her native Ghana for the first time. 鈥淎ll I had were summer dresses.鈥 A friend told her about the Ban Righ Centre, where staff helped her find winter clothes. 鈥淚t made all the difference,鈥 Dery says.
Equipped with her new wardrobe, Dery met with her research supervisor, , in the . Dr. Bisung was launching a study on empowerment in water and sanitation centres in Africa.
鈥淗e asked me what I could contribute to the project,鈥 she says, 鈥渁nd I realized, 鈥榃ow, this is the moment I鈥檇 been waiting for.鈥 鈥
In Ghana, Dery dealt with water issues every day.
鈥淓very morning I walked for 15 minutes, got in queue, got water, put it on my head, and carried it home,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd then I went to school.鈥
Dery recognizes that she had it easier than some of her neighbours.
鈥淚t costs money to access water,鈥 she says. 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 have money, you have to go to the stream at the outskirts of the community. It鈥檚 a much longer walk, and the water is not sanitary because we share it with animals.鈥
Dery鈥檚 research 鈥 at both the master鈥檚 and doctoral levels 鈥 involved collecting stories of how access to water and sanitation impacts and empowers women. She discovered that few women were sitting on the committees that decide where to put the water sources. 鈥淲omen are responsible for making sure there is water for the household,鈥 she says. 鈥淭o exclude us from decision-making about an issue we are responsible for is wrong.鈥
Today there are a few women on those committees, but Dery would like to see more. She鈥檚 heard women say they want to volunteer, but they鈥檙e too busy with household chores. Fortunately, a few Non-Government Organizations are campaigning to get men to help around the house.
鈥淢en have started helping,鈥 she says, 鈥渨hich is leading to more empowerment for the women.鈥
As her doctoral research nears its end, Dery continues to work toward empowerment.
鈥淚 am also trying to empower myself to give back whenever I can,鈥 she says.
She started a foundation focused on teaching girls to make their own reusable sanitary products, which are rarely available in Ghanian stores. She says she was inspired by her experiences with the Ban Righ Centre.
鈥淚f they hadn鈥檛 helped me find clothes, my experience in Canada would have been terrible,鈥 Dery says. 鈥淚t made me realize that this is something I could do. It鈥檚 like I鈥檓 starting my own little Ban Righ Centre in Ghana. I鈥檓 empowering women and children, just like Ban Righ.鈥
