A Lifelong Passion

John Armitage, Sc’71
¹ú²ú91ÓÈÎ︣ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´â€™s University Council Member

A good life is like a healthy tree with branches emanating from a solid trunk.

My trunk was my upbringing in Brockville, Ontario by loving parents, followed by a unique education at ¹ú²ú91ÓÈÎ︣ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´â€™s University. My degree in civil engineering allowed me to branch out into the field of municipal engineering which further branched out to the private sector into the land development and housing business where I remain to this day.

Another branch is my lifelong passion for the sport of rowing. I branched into coaching the fledgling ¹ú²ú91ÓÈÎ︣ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´â€™s rowing team in the spring of 1977 and have remained involved since, including 40 years as head coach. Because of this, my philanthropic giving to ¹ú²ú91ÓÈÎ︣ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´â€™s has been primarily directed to athletics.

My desire to have a positive impact on ¹ú²ú91ÓÈÎ︣ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´â€™s and its students has evolved into another branch of my tree – my involvement with University Council and being part of the Chancellor search advisory committee. I believe this volunteer work is making a difference to the ¹ú²ú91ÓÈÎ︣ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´â€™s community.

I hope that today’s students understand the sacrifice, generosity and passion of those who went before them. They will join a committed alumni family. The ¹ú²ú91ÓÈÎ︣ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´â€™s community is a powerful force for good, especially during these challenging times when it’s more important than ever to respect your fellow citizens.

It is a privilege to be involved with ¹ú²ú91ÓÈÎ︣ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´s University. I hope that my gifts of both time and financial resources will benefit the leaders of tomorrow.
