Ian died peacefully at age 75 on April 8, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, from complications of a second stroke.

Born in Toronto, Ont., June 30, 1949, to Jack and Dora (née Guttormsson) MacFarquhar. Ian is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carole (née Linton); son, David; sister, Meredith (Ed Thompson); and numerous long-time friends.

After growing up in Scarborough Ont., Ian graduated from ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He then began an impressive career focusing on broadband telecommunications (i.e. radio and television). After a five-year contract in Northern Ontario, he joined CUC Broadcasting in Scarborough, where he became VP, Engineering. He moved with his family to Saint John, New Brunswick, in 1995 to become VP of Engineering Technology at Fundy Cable, where he oversaw the rewiring of the provincial cable TV service. Ian was well known in the telecommunications industry, and in 1997 received the CCTA Galaxi Technical Award of Excellence. After leaving Fundy Cable, he established MCE Associates and accepted contracts all over the world before easing into retirement.

Always a tech guy, Ian got his amateur “ham” radio licence at age 16, becoming proficient in morse code. Ham radio remained a life-long passion, and he devoted many hours to promoting the hobby through national associations and in local clubs. He was an enthusiastic DJ for the ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s radio station. Ian was also a “gear head,” following Formula One racing intently and owning many hobby cars. He also owned at various times two airplanes, a Grampian sail boat and assorted motor boats.

But Ian wore many other hats. He had an eclectic passion for music ranging from 60s rock ‘n’ roll to the classics, serving for many years on the board of Symphony New Brunswick. He had a passion for politics and was a life-long self-described “red Tory”, working behind the scenes for both the provincial and federal Conservative parties. An arm-chair athlete, he resignedly suffered the misfortunes of the Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs. Ian travelled widely with the family, exploring Canada and the U.S. and enjoying the U.K., Europe, New Zealand and India.

Ian’s keen intellect was enhanced by Icelandic drive and a strong moral compass. He was hard working, reliable, and disciplined. Beyond that, he was a dedicated father and spouse, fiercely proud of David, and always supportive of Carole.

On the morning of June 4, 2025, quickly after an eight-year battle with Parkinson's, George passed away receiving care at Montfort Hospital and finally hospice care in La Maison de l’Est in Ottawa.

Predeceased by his wife, Monica (nee McMonagle) of 55 years in 2014; his parents, Harvey and Clementine; and five of his six siblings. He is survived by his son, Ian (Amanda); his daughter, Lynn (Mus'90) (Scott Howes); and his three granddaughters: Amelia, Sarah, and Meghan.

Born in Mimico, Ont., and raised on a small farm in what is now Mississauga, Ont., he was the youngest of seven children. His upbringing during the late stages of the Depression and the Second World War was tough, but that upbringing is what shaped his outlook on life and shaped his character.

He was a scientist, focused on risk assessment and setting standards for provincial, federal, and international environmental safety. He received his education from ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, resulting in his PhD from ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�'s in 1962. He worked for Dow Chemical in Indianapolis, the Canadian Government in Ottawa, and then the World Health Organization in Copenhagen and in Geneva, Switzerland by way of Raleigh, North Carolina.

After a lot of travelling for work and pleasure, he and Mom retired to the Kingston area in 1995. Our Dad was a man of his word, which was reflected not only in his ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s friendships, his work and travels, meeting new colleagues, but also in how he lived his life with his wife and family. If he said he was going to do something you knew he would follow through.

Cremation has already taken place, and a private family ceremony will happen over the summer. In lieu of flowers, if you are able, please consider donating to either Parkinson's Canada, the Montfort Foundation or Hospice Care Ottawa. Or if you wish, play an old Hank Snow song and remember your own dad. 

Jean Mildred Lund (nee Culver) passed away after a short illness on Monday, June 16, 2025, in Calgary, Alta., at the age of 96.

Jean was born and raised on the family farm on the outskirts of Simcoe, Ont. and maintained close ties with family and friends there throughout her life. She was a member of Arts’51 at ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s , earning a BA (Honours) and playing on the varsity women’s basketball team. Following graduation, she attended the Ontario College of Education (OCE) and obtained a teaching certificate. Jean enjoyed her years at ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�'s and OCE, where she made lifelong friendships.

She taught high school for four years, first in Thorold, Ont., and then in Sarnia, Ont., where she met her future husband, Neil Lund. They were married for 64 years, until Neil’s death in 2020. Jean and Neil moved several times as his career progressed, living in Sarnia, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, and Fort McMurray. They shared many interests, including the performing arts, bridge, cross-country skiing, and travelling extensively throughout Canada and the world.

A talented and enthusiastic gardener, Jean created beautiful gardens at each of their homes. She was a welcoming hostess who enjoyed entertaining many visitors. Jean was an avid reader and CBC Radio listener and was well informed on a broad range of topics. She was active in the Canadian Federation of University Women, serving on the Edmonton branch executive for several years and as the president for two years.

She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Pattison (David); sons, Charlie and Eric (Rocio); and four granddaughters, Laura, Anne, Elisa, and Sonia. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Fraser, and her sister-in-law, Karen Culver, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Neil; daughter, Joan; parents, Lloyd and Mildred (McNamara) Culver; sister, Mary Chambers; and brother, Sylvenus Culver.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Rocky Ridge Retirement Community and the Foothills Medical Centre Unit 46 for their compassionate care of Jean.

Intelligent, hardworking, determined, and generous, Jean will be greatly missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Bob passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 15, 2025, in Aurora, Ont., at the age of 84.

He was born in Kirkland Lake, Ont., to William and Marion Dengler and is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Patricia; his children, Steven (Bruna), Sandy, Heather (Stefan), and Andrea (Kevin); his grandchildren, Raffaele, Samantha, Jayden, Beric, Dylan, Daniel, and Nora; his brother, Peter (Barb); and Patricia’s siblings, Lorraine (Bob), Elmer, and June.

Bob had a passion for travel that took him and Pat on many wonderful adventures together. They climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro when Bob was 74. A year later they walked the Camino de Santiago Trail in Spain. They visited Silverback Gorillas in Rwanda and went on many African safaris. Vacations with friends were always on the books, visiting New Zealand, golfing in South Africa, travel to Iceland, and, most recently, their holiday in Bora Bora. Most cherished was his trip to Disney ,where he took his entire family. They also enjoyed golfing with friends all over the world. Bob’s love for golf was only surpassed by his passion for flying and fast cars. He managed to fit several lifetimes worth of exploits into his own, with never a dull moment.

From the depths of the Earth to the heights of the sky, Bob’s indomitable spirit was legendary. In 2005, at the age of 66, he earned his helicopter pilot’s licence. In 2017, Bob and his son, Steven, flew the Canada 150 Global Odyssey, the first Canadian circumnavigation of the world by helicopter. Bob also had an affinity for beautiful cars. He particularly adored Ferraris and was a dedicated fan of the Ferrari Formula 1 Team.

Bob worked as a hard rock miner during his university years, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s in 1965. He joined Redpath Mining as VP and general manager, developing numerous projects around the world. In 1980 he founded a new firm with William (Bill) Shaver, Dynatec Mining Limited.

Bob and Bill grew Dynatec from a small startup into a truly international force. Under their leadership, Dynatec expanded into the U.S. and developed groundbreaking equipment and processes now widely used in the mining industry. Bob also lectured tirelessly on mining safety from university campuses to global conferences. His many contributions to the mining industry were recognized with an Honourary Doctorate from ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s in 1988 and the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum’s McParland Memorial Award in 1990. After first bringing the company public, he retired as CEO in 2005 and served as vice-chairman of the board of directors and an officer of the company until 2007.

Bob lived a life of extraordinary breadth, making an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter. He will be remembered always with affection.

Ann passed away on Feb. 28, 2025, at 65.

She is survived by her husband, Owen Harries (Sc'83); children, Greg (Sc’13) (Kate) and Gillian; siblings, Andrew (Sandra) and Patricia (Darryl); mother, Sara, and extended family and friends.

Peter A. August 24, 1935 – December 31, 2024.

It is with profound love and sorrow that the family of Peter A. Masson announces his peaceful passing into eternity on New Year’s Eve, surrounded by his family, prayers, singing, and the unwavering love that defined his life. Peter was born in Windsor, Ont., Aug. 24, 1935, to Alice E. and George Y. Masson, the youngest of three brothers. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him. Peter was the beloved husband of Joan Masson (née M. E. Joan Douglas), his partner in life for 62 years. Together, they raised three sons: Stephen (Clare), Paul (Janice), and David (Linda). Peter was also a proud and loving grandfather, or "Poppa," to Nathanael, Stephanie, Melissa, Katherine, Joshua, the late Mackenzie, Jamie, Izzy, and Maddie. He is predeceased by his brothers Thomas and George. 

A man of deep faith, Peter lived a life devoted to God, his family, and his community. He was a long-time member and servant at Emmanuel Anglican Church (Richvale) and St. Christopher’s Anglican Church (Gloucester), where he shared his talents in many capacities, from treasurer and A/V services to serving as a welcomer. His quiet, steadfast faith was a cornerstone of his family life, often seen in the grace with which he led over family meals and his deep commitment to living out his Christian values.

Peter’s professional career began with his graduation from ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�'s in 1960 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He received his Chartered Accountant designation in 1963 and went on to work with Price Waterhouse and Imperial Oil before joining the Canadian-Radio and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in Ottawa. He later worked at CUC Broadcasting in Scarborough until his retirement in 1993. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Peter's legacy is defined by his commitment to service. 

A loyal and dedicated member of the Rotary Club of North Scarborough, he held the honour of being past president and a three-time Paul Harris Fellow. Peter believed deeply in the Rotary motto "Service Above Self," and his contributions to the club reflected this guiding principle. He worked on numerous initiatives, including the Rotary Scholarship Awards and the Rotary Youth Exchange program, helping to introduce international exchange students to the Canadian experience and the values of Rotary. 

Peter’s love for sailing was well known. As a long-standing member of the Highland Yacht Club, he enjoyed countless adventures on the seas, from the Caribbean and Great Lakes to the Muskoka Lakes. Whether commanding the helm of Sinbad, Synergy, Synergy II, or Elysium V, Peter’s passion for harnessing the wind in his sails reflected his zest for life and his spirit of adventure. 

His love of nature was also evident in his many camping and canoe trips, during which he introduced his family and others to the beauty of the natural world, which included leadership with Cubs and Scouts Canada. 

In his quieter moments, Peter enjoyed the sounds of classical music, often meditating on symphonies and operatic arias. He also cherished his time spent with his family, especially during the final holiday season of his life. Peter and Joan enjoyed a wonderful visit with Joan’s brother, Rob, and his wife, Trudy, before spending Christmas Day with Stephen and Clare’s family. Later, they hosted their extended family at their Markham home on Dec. 27, creating cherished memories in their final days together. 

Peter’s family is comforted by the knowledge that his life was one of purpose, generosity, and devotion. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and service to others that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. 

Peter is predeceased by his beloved granddaughter, Mackenzie, and is survived by his loving wife, sons, grandchildren, extended family, and a host of friends, who will remember him fondly. "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Brian Clare Bailey, March 31, 1943 to Feb. 15, 2025. 

A man with a giant heart, a keen wit and an endless desire to learn, grow and evolve, Brian Bailey passed away at 82 years young after a sudden illness at Ottawa Heart Institute. 

He began life as an only child but left it cherished, respected and loved by everyone he touched and helped. Brian is sadly missed by his loving wife, Nancy Defalco; their children, Andrew and Jennifer Reoch (husband, Steve Deschamps); grandson, Declan Reoch; and many cousins, sisters and brothers-in-law and their families. 

He had an open mind and open heart, open arms and an open door, hosting colleagues, friends and family until his final days with hearty laughs, hugs, heartfelt joy and lots of food and red wine. 

Born and raised in Smiths Falls, Brian earned his Doctor of Medicine at ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s and practiced family medicine before shifting focus to psychotherapy. In his last two years of medical school, he worked as a live-in child psychotherapist. That sparked a life-long passion for helping people overcome emotional/mental health issues to live full, fruitful lives. Thus began his quest to study many eclectic ideas and concepts, incorporating and shaping them into the many wellness programs he created and delivered over his very active life. He was a writer, painter, doctor, acupuncturist, mentor, trainer, educator, husband, father, grandpa, friend and confidante. 

Brian created a rustic retreat in the woods as a safe, tranquil place for his transformational programs. For decades, he and wife, Nancy, put their souls into expanding and evolving Econiche House as a couples retreat, a space for NGOs to renew and even a wedding venue for lives to join together, including the wedding of daughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Steve. Brian never saw his patients as sick and in need of healing. Through his lens, people all possessed within them the possibility of change and a life of splendour. He always found innovative solutions to overcome obstacles that prevented people from being able to say yes to participation in programs and life. He didn’t believe that things in life happen without an overarching reason. So certain was he of the evolution of humanity that he dedicated his life’s work to contributing to it. 

Brian never truly retired, choosing to remain actively involved in writing, research and in mentoring others to carry on delivering his latest program, Acudestress. In work and in life, he was on a journey of the mind, body and spirit. A hopeful life well lived. 

He left us with these inspiring words: “Remember, miracles are to come. I am not saying goodbye, but good sailing. Imagine lots!” 

These lyrics by John Denver sum up Brian’s journey through life. “What one man can do is dream. What one man can do is love. What one man can do is change the world. And make it young again. Here you see what one man can do.”

Gary Ralph Peck passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 8, 2025, at Health Sciences North after a brief illness. Gary is survived by his daughter, Laura McMahon and her husband, Brian; son, David; wife, Karen; and his beloved grandchildren, Owen and Gavin. He is also survived by his partner, Rochelle True; brother, Brian and his wife, Cindy; and niece, Tami; and nephew, Jim. 

Born in Leeds County in 1946 and raised in Parry Sound by his parents, Ralph and Bernice, he completed his undergraduate degree at ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s and his master’s at the University of Waterloo. With his now former wife, Diane Raddatz, they moved to Sudbury, where Gary began teaching at Garson High School. He then moved to Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, where he taught for 35 years, winning public school teacher of the year in 2007 – his last year at Lo-Ellen Park. As a beloved teacher and colleague at Lo-Ellen Park, Gary imparted his passion for Canadian history and the transformative impact of learning. He always enjoyed running into former students, and he also made lifelong friends with his colleagues, who appreciated his quick wit and dedication to his chosen career. Gary never gave up on a student and worked hard to ensure every student who entered classroom #344 left feeling valued. 

Although Gary moved to Sudbury in his mid-20s, he was committed to his adopted hometown. He wrote a weekly local history column, “The Not-so-Distant Past,” for The Sudbury Star and was proud to sit as the city councilor for Ward 3 in the 1980s. 

Over 40 years ago, Gary was instrumental in starting the Sudbury Genealogical Society, and later in life he was an active member of the Sudbury District Branch of the Ontario Geological Society, helping to document cemeteries throughout the Sudbury Region with a dedicated team and Rochelle by his side. 

Gary’s love of Canadian history extended to collecting a variety of antiques. He especially enjoyed taking his children on antique hunting adventures around the province.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Martha McConnachie on April 1, 2025. She passed quietly in her sleep. 

She was born on Oct. 3, 1954, in Mt. Kisco, New York, to the late Thomas and Helen (Tice) McLaren. She was predeceased by her beloved sister, Nancy Lee McLaren, and brother-in-law, Mark Gilligan, of Delhi, NY.

Martha was a vibrant and generous soul. She will be deeply missed by her devoted husband of 52 years, Daniel; her daughters, Grace (Jason) McConnachie and Sarah (Sean) McConnachie; her grandchildren, Alice Ngo and Maggie Landsman; her brother, James (Nancy Jean) McLaren; her nieces, Jamie McLaren and Casey McLaren; and numerous friends.

Martha and Daniel met at ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�’s and were married in 1973. She was from a long line of ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�'s grads: her grandfather, Arthur McLaren (MEng’11); her uncle, Jim McLaren (MEng’39); and her dad, Tom McLaren (BComH’49). Our daughter, Grace McConnachie, is also a ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�'s grad (Artsci’06) and Nutritional Science 2008. They were married for 52 years.

Martha had a wonderful 30-year career as an elementary music teacher. Music, family, reading and travel were her passions. 

Tomorrow is not promised. It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of Georgijev, Judy (Beaudry) of St. Thomas, who passed away peacefully at her residence on Dec. 18, 2024, at the age of 59. Beloved wife of Boris Georgijev; cherished mother of Chloe and Ethan; dear sister of Rick Beaudry (Jennifer Lovelady).

Judy was born on June 23, 1965, to the late George and Betty (Milligan) Beaudry. She was a loving daughter-in-law to Barica Georgijev (late Trajan); sister-in-law to Walter and Karen Georgijev; devoted cousin, niece and aunt to her extended family.

A proud graduate with honours at ����91���︣�����߹ۿ�'s, majoring in Life Sciences. Judy began her career in bovine homeopathy before spending 30 years at Trojan Technologies, starting in purchasing and later excelling in sales, where she spent the rest of her career.

Judy's greatest joy came from her children, family, friends and her dog, Ivy. She loved hosting events for family and friends, was an avid reader, enjoyed board games and was always ready for a good game of Euchre. She had a passion for travel, the outdoors, camping and anything on the water.

Throughout her courageous journey with cancer, Judy was an incredible inspiration. She never allowed her illness to define her, instead focusing on her family and others with unwavering strength and positivity. Her generosity knew no bounds, and her radiant smile illuminated every room she entered. Judy always gave more than she received back. Through to her last breath, she was more worried about her family than herself. A remarkably selfless life lived.
