This course will deal with animals and their relationship with human beings in the ancient classical past, using different sources, from art to literature and zooarchaeological remains. The focus will be mostly on Greeks and Romans, but also other areas of the ancient world will be covered, such as Etruria, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. Since antiquity animals have been not only a source of food and primary resources through hunting and husbandry. Along with their role in war, sport, religion, for many they were beloved pets not only during childhood and were celebrated in literature and funerary monuments dedicated to them. Animals were also included in philosophical thought along with being used to represent human ideals as characters of fables.
